Built using Data's own positronic brain as a template, Lal in several respects exceeded her creator, using verbal contractions and eventually experiencing emotions. Given the choice of form, she selected a Human female appearance; her name derives from a Hindi word meaning "beloved."
Regarded by Data as his daughter, Lal learned about humanity while working in Ten Forward under Guinan's mentorship, until Starfleet's interest in her prompted a proposed separation from her father.
