Nagilum was a non-corporeal, immortal being that existed outside the known universe and could not be detected by Federation sensors. Described as possessing a vast intelligence, it had no concept of gender or death and demonstrated telepathic and telekinetic abilities, including the capacity to kill with a mere thought.
In the 24th century, Nagilum trapped the USS Enterprise-D within a void it likened to a "hole in space" and experimented on the crew to study their reactions to various stimuli. Intrigued by the concept of a "limited existence," it killed a member of the crew to observe mortality firsthand, an inquiry that would have cost many more lives before Captain Jean-Luc Picard's activation of the ship's auto-destruct sequence brought the encounter to an end.
In a final exchange with Picard, Nagilum judged humanity to be aggressive and militant, obsessed with defying the inevitable, while conceding that the two might share the trait of curiosity. The character appears in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Chronological detail is presented in the Timeline.
