Captain Robert DeSoto is a Starfleet officer in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the commanding officer of the USS Hood and reckoned among Starfleet's most celebrated captains. From 2361 to 2364 his first officer was William T. Riker, whose refusal to let DeSoto lead a dangerous away mission to Altair III later influenced Jean-Luc Picard's decision to make Riker his own first officer.
Known for his good-natured griping about ferrying cargo between starbases, DeSoto delivered the Betazoid specialist Tam Elbrun to the Enterprise-D in 2366. He was portrayed by Michael Cavanaugh. Text is available under CC BY-SA.
