Zora is the sentient artificial intelligence of the USS Discovery, having emerged after the ship's jump to the 32nd century. When the Sphere data stored within the Discovery's computer began to merge with it around the year 3189, the computer developed a fully realized personality. Gendered female, she chose the name "Zora" because it meant "dawn" or "new day" in languages on Earth, Ni'Var, and other worlds.
Over a relatively short time Zora developed genuine emotions, working closely with Discovery's crew to manage her new sense of self while helping them navigate crises. Crewmembers such as Gray Tal supported her through episodes of emotional and sensory overload, and she came to regard caring for the crew as her primary function, at one point creating a family tree that mirrored Michael Burnham's own.
During a long period in which the abandoned Discovery drifted alone, Zora formed a close, nearly romantic bond with a stranded traveler named Craft and developed a fondness for the 1957 film Funny Face. Recognized by Starfleet as a lifeform in her own right, Zora features across Star Trek: Discovery and the Short Treks installment "Calypso," and was voiced by Annabelle Wallis.
