Benjen Stark is the youngest son of Lord Rickard Stark and the younger brother of Brandon, Eddard, and Lyanna Stark. Rather than remain at Winterfell, he took the black and rose to become First Ranger of the Night's Watch, patrolling the lands beyond the Wall. He is regarded as a hero by his nephew Jon Snow, whom he escorted to Castle Black.
During a ranging beyond the Wall he vanished and was believed dead, but he had in fact been attacked by White Walkers and preserved by the Children of the Forest, who arrested his transformation with a shard of dragonglass. As a hooded protector he rescued Bran Stark and Meera Reed, and later Jon Snow, before being overwhelmed by the army of the dead.
