Prince Oberyn Martell, known as the Red Viper of Dorne, was a member of House Martell and the younger brother of Prince Doran Martell and the late Princess Elia Martell. Renowned for his skill with a spear and his knowledge of poisons, he was the paramour of Ellaria Sand and the father of the eight bastard daughters known as the Sand Snakes.
A member of the Small Council representing Dorne, Oberyn was consumed by a fierce desire to avenge the murder of his sister Elia at the hands of House Lannister, a quarrel that ultimately led him to serve as Tyrion Lannister's champion in a trial by combat against Ser Gregor Clegane.
