Durin III is a King of Durin's Folk who ruled Khazad-dum, remembered as the first bearer of the mightiest of the Seven Dwarf-rings. Like others of his line who bore the name Durin, he was held by many Dwarves to be a reincarnation of Durin I. He appears briefly in the prologue of the Peter Jackson film The Fellowship of the Ring receiving one of the Dwarf-rings.
In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power he is shown at greater length as a proud, traditionally minded king and the father of Durin IV, whose growing possessiveness under the influence of his Ring of Power drives the drama of Khazad-dum and ends with his sacrifice fighting the Balrog to save his son.
