The Lord of the Rings·Order of Wizards·wizard in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional Middle-earth
Radagast the Brown is one of the five Wizards (Istari) sent to Middle-earth to oppose the will of Sauron. Originally the Maia Aiwendil in the service of the Vala Yavanna, he devoted himself to the plant and animal worlds and dwelt for a time at Rhosgobel on the western edge of Mirkwood, becoming a friend to beasts, birds, and the Great Eagles.
In Peter Jackson's Hobbit film trilogy, where he is portrayed by Sylvester McCoy, Radagast is an eccentric but brave figure who nurses the hedgehog Sebastian back to health, investigates the sickness spreading through the Greenwood, and helps waylay an Orc pack so that Thorin and Company can reach Rivendell. It was also thanks to Radagast that Gandalf later escaped imprisonment atop Orthanc upon the wings of the eagle Gwaihir.
