Sauron, the eponymous Lord of the Rings, is the greatest of the fallen Maiar and the second Dark Lord of Middle-earth. Originally the craftsman Mairon in the service of Aulë, he becomes the chief lieutenant of Morgoth in the First Age before rising to power in his own right.
In the Second Age Sauron deceives the Elves into forging the Rings of Power and secretly makes the One Ring to dominate them, later engineering the Downfall of Númenor. Defeated in the War of the Last Alliance, when Isildur cuts the Ring from his hand, he returns near the end of the Third Age to wage the War of the Ring, and is finally undone when the Ring is destroyed in Mount Doom. On screen he appears as the Necromancer, the fair-formed Annatar, and the Dark Lord across the film trilogies and The Rings of Power.
