Smaug is a fire-drake of the Third Age, considered the last great dragon of Middle-earth. Drawn by the wealth amassed by the Dwarves of Erebor, he laid waste to the nearby town of Dale and seized the Lonely Mountain, driving the surviving Dwarves into exile and hoarding their treasure for well over a century.
When Thorin and Company enter the mountain and the burglar Bilbo Baggins rouses him, Smaug flies out to raze Lake-town in revenge, only to be slain by Bard the Bowman, who pierces the single bare patch on the dragon's breast with a Black Arrow. In the Hobbit films Smaug is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his death marks the end of the great dragons of Middle-earth.
