Ser Brynden Tully, popularly known as 'the Blackfish,' is a character in HBO's Game of Thrones, portrayed by Clive Russell. A knight of House Tully and the younger brother of Lord Hoster Tully, he is uncle to Catelyn, Lysa, and Edmure. A respected and formidable battle commander who distinguished himself decades earlier in the War of the Ninepenny Kings, he earned his nickname after refusing an arranged marriage, quipping that he was the 'black fish' of the Tully school.
During the War of the Five Kings he serves as a commander in the army of his great-nephew King Robb Stark, and he narrowly escapes the Red Wedding by stepping outside moments before the massacre. He later reunites the Tully forces to retake Riverrun from House Frey, and dies defending the castle during its second siege rather than surrender. His involvement in specific events is covered in the Timeline.
