Gilly is a recurring character across Game of Thrones from its second through eighth seasons, portrayed as one of the Free Folk who live beyond the Wall. She is both a daughter and a wife of the wildling Craster, and the mother of a son, later named Sam, born of that forced union. Her name derives from the gillyflower.
After the Night's Watch mutiny at Craster's Keep leaves Craster and Lord Commander Jeor Mormont dead, Samwell Tarly flees with Gilly and her newborn. On the journey Sam kills a White Walker with a dragonglass dagger to protect her child, and the pair eventually reach Castle Black, where Gilly is sheltered as a refugee. She survives the wildling massacre of Mole's Town when Ygritte spares her, works in the kitchens and mends clothes, and is taught to read by Princess Shireen Baratheon.
Gilly's bond with Samwell Tarly deepens over the series as she accompanies him through the war for the dawn and beyond. This overview is compiled from the Game of Thrones Wiki under CC BY-SA 4.0; on-screen chronology is presented in the Timeline.
