Adar was a mysterious figure of the Second Age, called "Lord-father" by the Orcs. According to The Rings of Power, he was one of the Moriondor, among the first Elves captured and corrupted by Morgoth in the Elder Days, and he came to regard the Orcs (Uruk) as his children.
Believing himself freed of Sauron, Adar struck the Dark Lord down at Dúrnost with Morgoth's crown and led his Orcs into the Southlands, which he transformed and renamed Mordor as a homeland where the Orcs could live beyond the reach of Dark Lords. He was briefly captured and questioned by Galadriel, who perceived his corrupted nature.
When word came of Sauron's return, Adar raised an army and laid siege to Eregion in a bid to destroy his old master, only to be betrayed and slain by his own "children," who took Sauron as their new lord.
