Helm Hammerhand was the ninth King of Rohan and the last of the first line of its kings, of the royal House of Eorl. His byname came from his great strength fighting barehanded; in a famous quarrel he slew the Dunlending lord Freca with a single blow of his fist.
That killing brought war: Freca's son Wulf led a host that overran Rohan, and after defeat at the Fords of Isen, Helm withdrew into the stronghold at Helm's Deep, later named in his honour. He lost both his sons and died in the Long Winter of TA 2759, found frozen upright in the snow; his nephew Fréaláf succeeded him.
