Jabba Desilijic Tiure, more commonly known as Jabba the Hutt, was a Hutt male crime lord who ran a sprawling criminal empire from his palace on the Outer Rim world of Tatooine. A leading member of the Grand Hutt Council, he controlled much of the piracy, slavery, spice smuggling, and illicit trade that generated the planet's wealth, and his influence extended across the Outer Rim.
During the Clone Wars, both the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems courted Jabba's approval to gain access to his hyperspace lanes; after his son Rotta was kidnapped in a Separatist plot, he pledged his support to the Republic. He later preserved his power under the Galactic Empire, at one point allying with it to resist Imperial crackdowns on Outer Rim crime.
Jabba is remembered for his role in the capture of the smuggler Han Solo and his death at the hands of Leia Organa during the attempted execution of Luke Skywalker and his allies.
