Kira Nerys is a Bajoran officer in the Star Trek universe, a former resistance fighter who became a major (later colonel) in the Bajoran Militia and served as the Bajoran liaison officer aboard the space station Deep Space 9, eventually assuming command of the station.
Born in Bajor's Dahkur Province around 2343 and raised amid the Cardassian Occupation, Kira joined the Bajoran Resistance as a child, fighting in the Shakaar cell. After the Cardassian withdrawal in 2369, she was posted to Deep Space 9, where an initially wary relationship with Commander Benjamin Sisko grew into deep trust as she became his second-in-command.
Kira formed an enduring friendship with the station's security chief, Odo, and played a key role in the Dominion War and the Cardassian rebellion.
