Gwaihir the Windlord was the lord of the Great Eagles during the Third Age and a descendant of Thorondor, greatest of the Eagles. A swift and keen-sighted friend of Gandalf, he repeatedly came to the wizard's aid — bearing him away from imprisonment atop Orthanc, and later rescuing the reborn Gandalf the White from the peak of the Silvertine.
With his brother Landroval, Gwaihir led a company of Eagles to the Battle of the Black Gate, attacking the winged Nazgûl, and afterward flew to Mount Doom to lift Frodo and Sam from the erupting mountain. He appears in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Return of the King (2003). This summary follows public reference material under CC BY-SA; see the Timeline for chronology.
