Aragorn II, son of Arathorn II and Gilraen, was the sixteenth and last Chieftain of the Dúnedain of the North and, as Heir of Isildur, the rightful claimant to the thrones of Gondor and Arnor. Fostered in Rivendell by Elrond under the name Estel and known in the wild as Strider, he bore many names across a long life, including Thorongil in the service of Rohan and Gondor.
During the War of the Ring he joined the Fellowship of the Ring formed at Rivendell, carrying Andúril, the sword reforged from the shards of Narsil. He led the Three Hunters across Rohan, fought at Helm's Deep, summoned the Dead to break the Corsairs, and commanded the forces that relieved Minas Tirith at the Pelennor Fields before leading the Host of the West to the Black Gate.
With Sauron's defeat he was crowned King Elessar Telcontar, first High King of the Reunited Kingdom, and wed Arwen Undómiel. Portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson's film trilogy, Aragorn is one of the central figures of The Lord of the Rings on screen.
