R2-D2 was an R2-series astromech droid built by Industrial Automaton, distinguished by an adventurous and independent personality that endured because he was never given a full memory wipe. Over a long career of service he assisted a succession of prominent figures across the galaxy.
Beginning in the service of Queen Padme Amidala of Naboo, R2-D2 later accompanied Anakin Skywalker through the Clone Wars, frequently paired with the protocol droid C-3PO. He went on to serve Bail Organa and, during the Galactic Civil War, Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance.
R2-D2 played pivotal roles in numerous historic events, from carrying the technical readouts used to destroy the first Death Star to aiding the Resistance decades later.
