Thranduil, son of Oropher, is the Elvenking who rules the Woodland Realm of Mirkwood in the Third Age and the father of Legolas. Cautious and inward-looking, he guards his kingdom against the growing shadow of Dol Guldur.
He imprisons Thorin and Company as they pass through his realm, and after the death of Smaug leads the Elven forces at the Battle of Five Armies. In the War of the Ring he repulses the assault from Dol Guldur and afterward renames the forest Eryn Lasgalen. He is portrayed by Lee Pace in Peter Jackson's Hobbit films.
