The Lord of the Rings·Thorin and Company·fictional character from J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium
Bilbo Baggins was a Hobbit of the Shire, born in the Third Age to Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took and raised at Bag End in Hobbiton. Recruited by the wizard Gandalf as the "burglar" of Thorin and Company, he joined the Quest of Erebor and, over its course, found the One Ring and won it from Gollum in a riddle-game.
Carrying the Elvish blade Sting, Bilbo aided the Dwarves through the trolls' country, Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, and Lake-town, and was present for the Battle of Five Armies. He recorded his adventures in a book he called There and Back Again and became famous across Middle-earth.
In later life Bilbo adopted his younger cousin Frodo Baggins as his heir and, at Gandalf's urging, left him the One Ring before departing the Shire to dwell with the Elves. He is a screen character in Peter Jackson's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings films, portrayed by Martin Freeman and Ian Holm.
