The Witch-king of Angmar, also called the Lord of the Nazgul, is the chief of the nine Ringwraiths and the deadliest servant of the Dark Lord Sauron. Once a mortal lord corrupted by one of the Nine Rings of Power, he became an undying wraith bound wholly to Sauron's will. He founded and ruled the realm of Angmar, brought down the northern Dunedain kingdom of Arnor, and later seized the Gondorian city of Minas Ithil, which he refortified as the fortress of Minas Morgul.
In Peter Jackson's film trilogies he stabs Frodo Baggins on Weathertop with a Morgul-blade and, mounted on a winged beast, leads Sauron's armies against Minas Tirith. At the Battle of the Pelennor Fields he breaks the city's Great Gate and slays King Theoden of Rohan before he is destroyed, fulfilling the prophecy that he would not fall by the hand of man.
