Théoden, son of Thengel and Morwen Steelsheen, is the seventeenth King of Rohan and last of the Second Line of the House of Eorl. During the War of the Ring he is weakened and misled through the counsel of Gríma Wormtongue, an agent of Saruman, until Gandalf frees him and he takes up his sword Herugrim once more.
Renewed as Théoden Ednew, he defends the Hornburg against Saruman's army and later leads six thousand Rohirrim to the aid of Gondor at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where he is mortally wounded when his horse Snowmane falls upon him. In Peter Jackson's films he is portrayed by Bernard Hill and appears in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
