Azog was a mighty Orc of the Third Age who commanded the tribes of Moria. In Tolkien's account he was responsible for the death of the Dwarf King Thrór, whom he beheaded at the gates of Khazad-dûm, an atrocity that provoked the War of the Dwarves and Orcs and the climactic Battle of Azanulbizar, where he was slain by Dáin Ironfoot.
Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy greatly expanded the character as "Azog the Defiler," the Pale Orc: a towering Gundabad Orc who survives Azanulbizar after losing an arm to Thorin, wields a blade-prosthetic, rides a white Warg, and becomes one of the trilogy's chief antagonists. Sworn to destroy the line of Durin and allied with Sauron at Dol Guldur, he relentlessly hunts Thorin and Company.
In The Battle of the Five Armies he leads the assault on Erebor and Dale before being killed by Thorin on the frozen heights of Ravenhill.
