The Lord of the Rings·Thorin and Company·fictional character in The Hobbit
Thorin II Oakenshield, son of Thráin II and grandson of King Thrór, is the exiled heir of the Kingdom under the Mountain and, in time, King under the Mountain. He earns the epithet Oakenshield at the Battle of Azanulbizar, wielding an oaken branch as a shield.
Determined to reclaim Erebor from the dragon Smaug, Thorin gathers a company of Dwarves and hires the hobbit Bilbo Baggins as their burglar. After Smaug's death he succumbs to dragon-sickness over the recovered hoard, but reconciles with Bilbo before dying of wounds taken while leading the alliance in the Battle of Five Armies. He is portrayed by Richard Armitage in the Hobbit films.
