Maul was a Force-sensitive Dathomirian Zabrak who was taken as a child from his mother, the Nightsister leader Mother Talzin, and trained in secret by the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Molded into a deadly warrior and given the title Darth Maul, he was driven by hatred of the Jedi and, later, of his own former master.
Maul first revealed the return of the Sith during the Invasion of Naboo, where he killed the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn before being struck down and bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi. He survived, and years later, restored by his brother Savage Opress and his mother's magicks, he re-emerged during the Clone Wars to build a criminal empire known as the Shadow Collective, briefly seizing control of Mandalore.
In the Imperial era Maul operated as an underworld crime lord, coordinating syndicates including Crimson Dawn while evading the Emperor's Inquisitors. His long life ended in a final duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine, where he died believing his old enemy would one day be avenged.
