Samwise Gamgee, known as Sam, is a hobbit of the Shire, gardener and closest friend to Frodo Baggins, and the most steadfast member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Chosen to accompany Frodo on the quest to destroy the One Ring, he proves the most loyal of companions.
Sam saves Frodo more than once, fights off the great spider Shelob, briefly bears the Ring at Cirith Ungol, and carries Frodo up the slopes of Mount Doom. After the War of the Ring he marries Rose Cotton and is later elected Mayor of the Shire for seven terms. He is portrayed by Sean Astin in Peter Jackson's film trilogy.
