Faramir is the younger son of Denethor II, Ruling Steward of Gondor, and the brother of Boromir. Captain of the Rangers of Ithilien and, after Boromir's death, Captain of the White Tower, he is a wise and gentle leader schooled in lore by Gandalf.
During the War of the Ring, Faramir encounters Frodo and Sam in Ithilien and, resisting the temptation of the One Ring, sets them free to continue their quest. Gravely wounded in the defence of Gondor and narrowly saved from his father's funeral pyre, he is healed by Aragorn, weds Éowyn of Rohan, and becomes the first Prince of Ithilien. His role is shown chiefly in adaptations of The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
