The Lord of the Rings·character from Tolkien's legendarium
Beorn was a Northman and skin-changer who dwelt in the upper Vales of Anduin between Mirkwood and the Misty Mountains, able to take the shape of a great black bear. A warrior of enormous strength who kept bee pastures and unusually intelligent animals, he guarded the Ford of Carrock against the Northern Orcs and Wargs he despised.
During the Quest of Erebor he gave shelter, food, and horses to Thorin and Company, Gandalf, and Bilbo Baggins. When war came to the Lonely Mountain he arrived in time for the Battle of Five Armies, where he bore the mortally wounded Thorin from the field and slew the Orc-leader Bolg.
In later years Beorn became a great chieftain of the folk who took his name, the Beornings, and was succeeded by his son Grimbeorn the Old before the War of the Ring.
