Bombur was a Dwarf of the late Third Age, brother of Bofur and cousin of Bifur, and one of the Company of thirteen who journeyed with Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield to reclaim the Lonely Mountain. Not of Durin's line but descended from the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, he was famed as the fattest of the Company and was often reckoned to count as two Dwarves.
Good-natured and fond of food, Bombur is remembered for tumbling into the Enchanted stream of Mirkwood and sleeping for days under its spell, a burden his companions had to carry. He fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies and dwelt afterward at the Lonely Mountain, growing ever stouter in his later years.
In Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy he is portrayed by Stephen Hunter as the Company's chief cook and a source of comic relief who proves surprisingly effective in a fight. This overview is offered under CC BY-SA; chronology appears in the Timeline.
