Bofur was a Dwarf of the late Third Age, brother of Bombur and cousin of Bifur, and one of the Company of thirteen who set out with Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and Gandalf to reclaim the Lonely Mountain. Descended from the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm rather than the House of Durin, he came of mining and toy-making folk.
Cheerful, blunt, and unfailingly optimistic, Bofur befriended Bilbo on the road and gave him heart when the hobbit's courage flagged. He fought in and survived the Battle of Five Armies and received his fourteenth share of Erebor's treasure, living on in prosperity under the Mountain.
In Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy he is played by James Nesbitt and carries a mattock, with an expanded role that includes standing watch in the Misty Mountains and tending the ailing Kíli in Lake-town. This overview is offered under CC BY-SA; chronology appears in the Timeline.
