Bifur was a Dwarf of the late Third Age, one of the thirteen companions of Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield on the Quest of Erebor, alongside his cousins Bofur and Bombur. Descended from the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm rather than the royal House of Durin, he and his kin were driven from the Lonely Mountain by Smaug and lived in exile, where Bifur worked as a toy-maker.
A valiant warrior, Bifur endured trolls, goblins, spiders, and the dragon on the journey and fought fiercely in the Battle of Five Armies. Afterward he received his share of the treasure from Dáin Ironfoot and retired to the restored kingdom under the Mountain.
In Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, portrayed by William Kircher, Bifur bears the rusted remains of an Orc axe in his skull that leaves him able to speak only Khuzdul and the sign-language Iglishmêk, until a head-butt in the final battle dislodges it and restores his speech.
