The great grey chief wolf is the leader of a large pack of Wargs from beyond the Edge of the Wild, frequent allies of the Northern Orcs of Goblin-town in their raids on the Woodmen of Mirkwood.
In The Hobbit, the chief wolf traps Thorin and Company in the trees before being routed by Gandalf's flaming pine-cones. In Peter Jackson's Hobbit film trilogy the role is embodied by the "Warg Matriarch," the great white steed of the Orc-chieftain Azog, who is slain at the Battle of the Five Armies.
